State employees tend to their health at fair

Screenings include blood pressure, body fat checks

Unpredictable weather forced a state-employee health fair indoors Wednesday.

But it failed to deter hundreds of employees, their families and friends from receiving health screenings and checking out offers from companies ranging from Costco to the University of Phoenix.

The fair was moved from the state printing plant to the conference room of the Oregon Lottery. The buildings are next to each other on Airport Road SE.

It was sponsored by the safety and wellness team at the Department of Administrative Services, which oversees the management of state government, and was arranged by Health Management USA of Battle Ground, Wash., which does similar health fairs for other agencies and corporations.

DAS spokesman Lonn Hoklin said the state has sponsored such fairs for about five years.

"Their purpose is to give state employees important information about some features of their own health and to do it in a convenient way and informal setting," he said.

Some screenings, such as blood pressure checks and body fat testing, were free. Others required appointments and payment of fees, although in many cases, they were less than people would pay otherwise. Other companies pay for booths to distribute information about their products and services.

About two dozen vendors were on hand.

The state sponsors several fairs during the year at different locations. One that is open to the public, in addition to state employees and military personnel, is scheduled Oct. 10 at the Salem Armory.
